How Secure Is Bank of Ireland?

Security Feature Available on Bank of Ireland?
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Yes
Biometric Login Yes
Passcode Yes
365 PIN Yes
User ID Yes
Payment Limits Yes
Freeze Card Yes
Device Manager Yes
Verification of Payee (VoP) Yes

When you register and activate online banking with Bank of Ireland, you’ll set a 365 PIN which is a 6-digit code. For security reasons you cannot use your date of birth, 6 of the same digits or a sequence like 123456. Bank of Ireland have made this code less important, but it may still be required when registering a new device to online banking, re-registering an existing device or regaining access to a locked account.

The first device that you use to log into the Bank of Ireland app becomes your registered device. You’ll need to set a 6-digit passcode for each registered device that uses the app. This passcode is separate to your 365 PIN. This is the code that you’ll use to login, authorise transactions, add payees and approve everyday banking actions. If you haven’t set a passcode, you’ll need your 365 PIN to log into online banking.

If you want to log into the mobile app without entering your passcode you’ll need to enable biometric logins (i.e. Face ID & Touch ID). When in the Bank of Ireland app, click the profile icon in the top right corner of the screen and click ‘Biometrics and Passcode’. From here, enable biometrics. If you need to freeze your card at any time, this can be done within the ‘Cards’ section of the app.

Bank of Ireland Physical Security Key (PSK)

If you don’t use the Bank of Ireland mobile app, you’ll need a Physical Security Key (PSK). A Bank of Ireland PSK is a physical device that generates unique codes to authenticate login attempts as well as other banking activities like adding a new payee, making payments and changing contact details. You’ll need both your 365 PIN and the code generated by your PSK to log into online banking without a registered device.

You can order a PSK over the phone, in-branch or online by completing a Physical Security Key Order Form. The PSK will arrive within 5-7 working days. When you receive your PSK you’ll need to:

  • 1
Turn the device on by pressing ‘OK’
  • 2
    Enter 1254
  • 3
    Create a 4-digit PSK PIN
  • 4
Activate the PSK online using the last 4 digits of the serial number found on the back of the device

When you log into online banking with your 365 PIN, you’ll need to turn on your PSK, enter your PSK PIN and press ‘1’ when ‘SELECT OPT’ appears on the device. You’ll then take the 6-digit code from the PSK and enter it into the relevant field in your web browser.

When adding a payee with 365 Online, after you’ve entered your 365 PIN, turn on your PSK, enter your PSK PIN and press ‘2’ when prompted to do so. A 4-digit code will appear on 365 Online which you’ll need to enter into your PSK. After that, a 6-digit code will appear on the PSK which you’ll need to enter into 365 Online.

When making a payment with 365 Online, after you’ve entered your 365 PIN, turn on your PSK, enter your PSK PIN and press ‘3’ when prompted to do so. A 6-digit code will appear on 365 Online which you’ll need to enter into your PSK. After that, an 8-digit code will appear on the PSK which you’ll need to enter into 365 Online.

Key Insight: If you get your PSK PIN wrong five times in a row your PSK will be blocked and you’ll need to request a new one from Bank of Ireland.
