Is N26 Safe for Irish Customers in 2026? (BaFin Regulation)
N26 is a fully regulated German bank making it perfectly safe for use. The company is supervised by BaFin, who are the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority in Germany. N26 obtained its full German banking license in 2016 and, at the time, was the first ever digital bank to achieve the feat.
Since then, N26 has expanded its business into 24 countries, processing over €140bn worth of transactions annually for its more than 8 million customers who entrust over €10 billion worth of deposits with the bank. As an EU regulated bank, deposits held with N26 are fully protected and guaranteed by the German State up to €100,000 per depositor.

N26 requires customers to verify their mobile device via SMS and to set a password. This becomes the primary paired mobile device for the account. The app supports biometric logins, via FaceID and TouchID, as well as a standard password login.
To make your account even more secure, N26 uses Keyless Authentication. Put simply, your device will be associated with your identity through biometric data (i.e. a 3D face scan), which acts as a cryptographic key. This allows you to login to new devices faster, even when you’ve lost your number.
N26 also requires customers to set a 4-digit Confirmation PIN, which is different from your card PIN, that’s used to confirm in-app activity such as transfers and password changes. Where Keyless Authentication isn’t enabled, a login attempt from a new device would require the 4-digit Confirmation PIN, your email address, password and an SMS confirmation to your registered phone number.
Customers can only pair one mobile device to their N26 account at a time, preventing simultaneous unauthorized access. In addition, within the ‘Card Settings’ section of the app, Irish customers can access security options including daily payment limits, daily ATM limits and card locking.
Customer Support
Like most neobanks, N26 uses 24/7 AI chat support as a first line of defense for customer queries. However, you can choose to speak with a specialist at any time by simply typing ‘live agent’ into the chat. Irish customers on a paid N26 plan can access phone support. On top of this, N26 has an extensive FAQ and article section in-app which covers many of the most common inquiries.

German IBANs
All N26 paid plans come with up to 13 German IBANs - three IBANs for the main account, joint account and savings account plus up to 10 IBANs via N26 ‘Spaces’. You’re essentially getting 13 bank accounts with an N26 paid plan. Why would you want that? Having multiple bank accounts allows you to budget more effectively, as you can have different accounts for different types of transactions.
N26 Spaces
To make use of your 10 additional IBANs, you need to create ‘Spaces’ on N26. Spaces are N26’s take on sub-accounts, with each account or ‘Space’ having its own German IBAN. You could have separate Spaces for rent, groceries, subscriptions, holidays and much more. For example, when you go to the supermarket and purchase groceries, the money comes out of your groceries Space, not your main account or another Space.
To create a new Space, on the ‘Home’ tab, scroll through the icons on the top of the screen until you see a ‘+’ icon. Then, click ‘Spaces sub-accounts’. Here, you’ll be able to see how many of your 10 IBANs have been used, but for now, click ‘Organising your money’. You’ll be asked to name your Space and to give it an icon. N26 will ask you to set a funding goal for your Space if you wish. You’ll also be asked whether you want to transfer money into the Space and whether you want to turn Round Up on. We’ll get to that later.
Once the Space has been created, click “Add an IBAN to this Space”. N26 will then assign your space with its own German IBAN. Each Space gets its own set of insights and monthly bank statements, accessible through the Space settings.
Scheduled Payments
Let’s say you’ve created a Space for a recurring expense, say, utilities or rent, and you now want to put those payments on auto-pilot. There are two ways to do this.
If you want to set up a direct debit, where your service provider pulls the money from your account, then simply provide them with your Space IBAN. Once the direct debit has been set up, it will appear within the Space’s ‘Scheduled Payments’, which can be viewed by clicking ‘Manage’ > ‘Scheduled Payments’.
Key Insight: If your direct debit fails due to insufficient funds within the Space, the transaction will bounce and N26 will charge you a €3 fee. This is why it’s crucial to enable notifications from N26, as they will send you a reminder about upcoming direct debits.
The second way to put a transfer on auto-pilot is via standing order. When in ‘Scheduled Payments’, click the ‘+’ icon in the top right corner and then click ‘+’ again. N26 will allow you to set up a bank transfer to another person or company, provided you have their IBAN. Once you set the amount, you can then tell N26 how often the payment should be made, the start date, end date and the transfer type.
Virtual Cards
You can have a maximum of 6 virtual cards at once on an N26 paid plan. An N26 virtual card operates in the same way as a physical card, with its own card number, CVC and expiry date. It can be used for online shopping, recurring subscriptions or daily transactions by adding it to your digital wallet.
To create a virtual card, on the ‘Card’ tab, click ‘Get an extra card’ and then ‘Virtual’. You can select whatever virtual card design you like. N26 will ask you what account the virtual card should be linked to. Whatever account you choose is the account that the card will pull money from when used in a transaction. If you’ve created Spaces, they will appear here as linking options in addition to your main account.
If you had a Space for, say, groceries, you could create a virtual card that’s linked to that Space and add it to your digital wallet. Then, when you’re shopping, you would use that card to pay for your groceries and the money would come out of your groceries Space. To avoid clutter, consider only having one or two virtual cards in your digital wallet for the most common day-to-day spending items. Remaining cards could be used for ‘set and forget’ transactions like monthly subscriptions or as one-off burner cards for online shopping.
Key Insight: N26 virtual cards can be used as burner cards where you’re concerned about the safety of a particular merchant online. After the transaction is complete, simply delete the virtual card and create a new one. That way, even if a hacker was to get access to your card details, they would already be redundant.
You can link an existing virtual card to a Space by clicking ‘Link a card’ within the Space.
Shared Spaces
Whether you’re pooling money for a holiday, a group gift, or shared household expenses, N26 Shared Spaces is a great way to manage the process, without the need for a joint account.
N26 allows you to create Shared Spaces with others. To create a Shared Space, on the ‘Home’ tab, scroll through the icons on the top of the screen until you see a ‘+’ icon. Then, click ‘Spaces sub-accounts’ and ‘Group expenses’. The purpose of a Shared Space is to allow up to 10 people to move money in and out of a single account.
Two ideas for a Shared Space might include:
- Roommates: each roommate contributes their share of the monthly rent and utility bills to the Shared Space
- Group Holidays: every person going on the holiday puts in their cut of the flights, hotel and group activities
Shared Spaces don’t have their own IBAN and cannot be linked with an N26 card. For that reason, they’re best used where one member pays for the expense and then takes what they’re owed from the pot.
Budgeting
Every N26 plan comes with basic insights where you can see a breakdown of your expenses by category as well as your total balance across different accounts. That said, the N26 paid plans provide access to a full suite of budgeting and automation tools:
Income Sorting
Income Sorting allows you to automatically split and send your salary, and other income sources, to different Spaces within N26. If you’re planning on using direct debits linked to Spaces, then automatic Income Sorting is one of the best ways to ensure that your Spaces have sufficient funds to settle the transaction.
On the ‘Finances’ tab, click ‘Automations’ and then ‘Income Sorter’. N26 will ask you to set a monetary threshold to determine which income sources should be automatically sorted. For example, if your monthly salary after-tax was €2,500, you could set the threshold to €2,000 or lower to be safe. That’s in case you unexpectedly get a lower payment than normal or forget to tell N26 about a reduction in monthly income i.e. perhaps due to higher pension contributions. If you want all of your income to be sorted, you could set this to €0.
You will then see a list of your accounts and Spaces. You can choose to either split money by percentage (i.e. 50% to needs, 30% to wants, 20% to savings etc.) or by a fixed amount (i.e. €750 to rent, €400 to groceries, €1,000 to savings etc.). Once you’ve decided on your splits, Income Sorting will be activated. It can be deactivated at any time.
Key Insight: You can choose to send money directly to a Shared Space via Income Sorting. This means you can settle up expenses with your roommates or pay money into a pot for a group holiday without needing to give it a second thought.
Rules for Spaces
If Income Sorting is for automatically moving external money (i.e. money coming into N26), then ‘Rules for Spaces’ can be thought of as a way to automatically move internal money (i.e. money already on N26).
On the ‘Finances’ tab, click ‘Automations’ and then ‘Rules for Spaces’. You then want to ‘Create a rule’. For example, you could set a rule that automatically transfers €50 from your Instant Access Savings account to your ‘Fun Money’ Space every Friday at 3pm. That could then be your allowance for the weekend.
Round Up
Round Up allows you to save on N26 as you spend, rounding up transactions to the nearest euro. For example, if you spend €3.50 on a coffee, N26 will round up that transaction to €4.00 and put €0.50 into a Space of your choice. You can then set a multiplier for your rounded up amounts - x1, x2, x3 or x5. Here’s how it would work in practise:
| Multipler | Round Up | Total Saved |
|---|---|---|
| x1 | €0.50 | €0.50 |
| x2 | €0.50 | €1.00 |
| x3 | €0.50 | €1.50 |
| x5 | €0.50 | €2.50 |
Using our example, if your multiplier was set to x2, the total cost of the transaction would be €4.50, with €1.00 of that being saved into a Space of your choice.
Budget
N26 allows you to set a monthly budget for spending. While budgeting features may seem like a ‘nice to have’, they can lead to real improvements in savings by promoting and tracking healthy money habits.
On the ‘Home’ tab, scroll down to Insights and click the ‘+’ sign beneath ‘Monthly budget’. You’ll then need to set a total monthly budget for your spending, say, €2,000. You can tell N26 to exclude spending in categories such as Savings & Investments from the budget too.
You can also set budgets for different categories of spending i.e. bars and restaurants, food and groceries, transportation and car etc. N26 is smart enough to recognise the category of expense as you spend. Your total budget should be greater than or equal to the sum of the individual budgets that you set for different categories.
N26 will send you weekly budgeting updates with how you’re progressing relative to the goals that you’ve set.
Auto Top-Ups
It’s possible to automatically top up your N26 account on a recurring basis. This can be a helpful way to ensure that your account is always sufficiently funded for scheduled payments, split bills or savings goals.
To do this, on the ‘Finances’ tab, click ‘Automations’ and then ‘Add money recurrently’. You want to ‘Create a recurring deposit’. N26 will ask you to specify the amount, the payment method and the Space that should receive the deposit. You’ll then need to decide on a deposit frequency (weekly, biweekly, monthly or quarterly) as well as a start date and optional end date.
Key Insight: When using a credit or debit card to fund recurring deposits, remember that only the first deposit each month is free of charge. Any further deposits will attract a 3% fee. A better alternative could be to set up a standing order with your other bank to automatically send your N26 account a specified amount each week, month or quarter. N26 would not charge a fee on this.
Interest
The savings rates on N26 Standard, Smart and Go aren’t overly competitive when stacked against other neobanks, standing at between 0.30% - 0.50%. You can discover the best savings rates in Ireland using our savings comparison tool. However, N26 Metal does come with 2% instant access savings, albeit at €16.90 per month - so you’d want to be using it for more than just savings to justify the price. You’d need to keep approximately €15,134 in an N26 Metal account to fully cover its monthly cost using after-tax interest.
Foreign Currency & Travel
One of the more attractive aspects of N26 is that they offer free worldwide card payments in any currency, at no cost to the customer. That means you can bring your N26 card anywhere in the world and pay using euros for free. No currency conversion fees, no transaction processing fees and no weekend markups. What's more, this is available to all N26 users, including those on N26 Standard. The only other neobank that offers this feature to Irish customers on a free plan is Trade Republic.
However, if you wish to withdraw money in a currency other than euro, that’ll cost you 1.7% of the transaction amount (unless you’re on N26 Go or N26 Metal, then it’s free).
Our Recommendation
N26 Smart
N26 Smart will likely be the most balanced plan for the majority of Irish customers. At €4.90 per month you’re getting:
- 13 German bank accounts in one
- 6 virtual cards
- Full access to income sorting, spaces, round up and other budgeting tools
- 3 free ATM withdrawals per month
- Phone customer service
- Plus everything included in N26 Standard
Other Options
Upgrading to N26 Go or Metal would be worthwhile if you foresaw yourself making multiple ATM withdrawals per month, both in Ireland and abroad, as well as spending a lot of cash outside of the EEA, UK and Switzerland. Plus, N26 Metal does come with 2% savings, opening up a good opportunity to pay for the plan itself using after-tax interest (~€15,134 deposit required).
N26 Discount Pricing
N26 does offer discounted pricing for advance purchases of plans:
- N26 Smart: Annually - €3.90 per month (~20% discount), Biannually - €4.40 per month (~10% discount)
- N26 Go: Annually - €7.90 per month (~20% discount), Biannually - €9.40 per month (~5% discount)
